PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA IN REMEDIAL & SPORTS MASSAGE
The Western School awarded Professional Diploma in Remedial & Sports Massage provides in-depth, practical tuition in both Remedial and Sports massage, building on Swedish massage methods and introducing a wide range of highly effective new techniques.
These include:
• advanced consultation skills and appropriate safety checks.
• assessment procedures for common conditions and injuries.
• myofascial, neuromuscular and muscle energy techniques (MET).
• trigger point therapy.
• proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF).
• stretching.
• active, passive, and resisted mobilisations.
• joint mobilisation techniques.
Diploma course
The treatment of many common disorders and injuries is covered along with a specific module dedicated specifically to Sports Event Massage – for working alongside athletes in competition and training.
Further study in relevant Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology accompanies the extensive ‘hands-on’ sessions ensuring the student gains the necessary experience to practise successfully in both the remedial and sports fields.
The Western School awarded Professional Diploma allows the successful graduate to access professional indemnity insurance and to go straight into practice as soon as they graduate.
The course is credit-rated by Glasgow Caledonian University and attracts:

Work with your client to reduce pain, restore balance, increase ROM & improve performance. To assess, differentiate and identify conditions such as muscular problems, ligament problems & joint capsule problems. To utilise active, passive, and resisted test and mobilisation techniques and safety check techniques for contraindication identification. In-depth anatomy of the main joints of the body, their ligaments, muscles and the common injuries & conditions which affect them.
Course Details
Diploma in Remedial & Sport Massage (DRSM)
A recognised, credit-rated similar level to Swedish or Therapeutic massage, Aromatherapy, Shiatsu or equivalent. These must have included an appropriate level of Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology.
Nine weekends over a nine-month period.
Glasgow Caledonian University (City Campus)

As with many schools, award of the Western School Professional Diploma is based on a process of continuous assessment throughout the course, but additionally, and very importantly, home practice, homework (with feedback), written and practical assessments and the completion of formal case studies ensure that the graduate is fully prepared to enter the profession as a demonstrably highly skilled therapist.
The premises at GCU used for Western School courses have full disabled access. Additionally, the school has a commitment to working with students with special needs. A significant number of therapists who have graduated from the Western have done so despite challenges such as dyslexia and visual impairment.
Students can benefit from the strong relationships fostered between the Western School and professional and semi-pro sporting organisations. Where you can choose to work alongside the physiotherapists in sports like Scottish football & rugby both in training and competition environments to gain further relevant experience and enhance CV’s.
Full Course Fee – £1840.
We require a £250 non-refundable deposit on registration to secure your place. The balance of £1600 can be paid in full at the start of the course or you can enquire about payment in 8 equal monthly instalments. This is on the understanding that should you drop out of the course for any reason, the full balance becomes payable. Students sign a contract to this effect.

Advanced soft tissue, trigger point therapy, muscle energy (MET), PNF stretching, neuromuscular, myofascial, peripheral joint mobilisation.
Specific treatment protocols for many conditions including:
Tennis elbow & ankle sprain, low back pain & pelvic issues, muscle impingement, sciatica, frozen shoulder and iliopsoas tension disorders.
Massage in sport including:
Specific sporting injury treatments, psychology of sports massage, rehabilitation and sports event massage.
